Course: Animal Science & Farm Animal Taxonomy

In this unit exploration, kids will embark on an exciting journey to explore the world of farm animal classification and the importance of understanding different species within agriculture. This unit is designed to give them a deeper appreciation for both domesticated and wild animals, and how they fit into the environment of a farm. They’ll learn the foundational concepts of animal science, explore how animals are classified scientifically, and discover the wildlife that shares the land with farm animals.

WHAT THEY'LL LEARN

Throughout this unit exploration, they’ll explore three main chapters, each offering a unique perspective on farm animal science:

CHAPTER BREAKDOWN

Chapter 1: What is Animal Science?
Kids will start by diving into the world of animal science. They’ll learn the basics, from understanding the scope of animal science. This chapter provides a strong foundation for the rest of their journey into the world of animal care and classification.

Chapter 2: Farm Animal Classification
In this chapter, they’ll explore the classification of farm animals, including taxonomy and species information cards. They’ll learn how animals are grouped based on their characteristics and explore the similarities and differences between different species. Kids will cover livestock, companion animals, and other key groups that share the farm environment.

Chapter 3: Bonus – Eastern Woodland Mammals
This bonus chapter introduces kids to Eastern Woodland Mammals. These animals share the environment with farm animals, and understanding their role is crucial for managing farm life. We’ll look at 17 wildlife species, learn about their behaviors, adaptations, and the impact they might have on farm life.

UNIT STRUCTURE AND ACTIVITIES

This unit is designed to help kids gradually build their knowledge and skills. Each chapter includes a narrative that introduces them to the topic, followed by activities to help reinforce what they have learned.
