UNIT OVERVIEW

This unit introduces learners to the role that animal identification and health practices play in modern agriculture. Learners explore livestock identification, One Health, animal disease prevention, animal care, biosecurity, vital signs, medications, food safety, and the relationship between animal health and sustainable agriculture.

Through reading, hands-on activities, research, observation, problem-solving scenarios, and discussion, learners connect animal science concepts to real-world agricultural practices. 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By the end of this unit, learners will be able to:

• Explain why accurate livestock identification is important for animal care, recordkeeping, and traceability.
• Identify common livestock identification methods and explain why different methods are used for different species.
• Describe the connections among animal health, human health, and environmental health through the One Health concept.
• Identify common causes and risk factors associated with poor animal health, disease, and injury.
• Explain how daily care, animal health planning, facility management, and biosecurity help prevent disease and injury.
• Recognize basic signs of normal and abnormal animal health.
• Interpret basic information found on an animal medication label, including dosage, administration, cautions, and withdrawal information.
• Apply animal health knowledge to livestock care scenarios and consider appropriate prevention and management strategies.
• Explain how animal health practices contribute to animal welfare, food safety, and sustainable agriculture.
